Alabaster Books is proud to announce that David has been named as one of the six winners of the Writer's Digest International Self-Published Book Awards Contest for 2005 for his novel,   PAID IN FULL.

Private investigator/novelist David Shaffer lives with his wife Mary and their dog Max in North Carolina. He is an active licensed investigator in California and North Carolina and currently operates his one-man private detective agency in North Carolina’s Piedmont-Triad area.

He is currently working on his third novel in the Harry Caine Mystery Series.David spends most of his time resolving client assignments. The remainder of his time is consumed by writing, reading, and playing drums in the Greensboro Big Band.  

Prior to entering the private detective business, David had a career in the computer business as a software engineer and ultimately as the Director of Engineering at a major Silicon Valley hi-tech company.  He has been a private investigator since 1990. The PI business provides a steady stream of plot-line ideas and character profiles. David was born in West Virginia and moved to Miami at an early age,  where he attended public schools, and graduated from the University of Miami after serving a four year hitch in the U.S. Navy. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in psychology.

Harry Caine, a licensed California private investigator,  closes his one-man agency in Silicon Valley, to try a new way of life in Washington, D.C. After building a getaway boat, he departs for the Caribbean Islands and hopes never to look back.  On the way south, a boating accident requires repairs, but Harry lacks the money to pay the bill. An unscrupulous boat-yard controller, exiled from his family’s crime business in New Jersey, offers Harry a job delivering five, seemingly ordinary, boxes from Daytona Beach to a Silicon Valley scientist/inventor. Harry soon discovers the contents of the boxes, gets caught up in this compelling coast-to-coast mystery, and finds himself back in the business.

 

 

 


Harry Caine, a licensed Florida PI, was working cases in West Palm Beach when a satisfied client recommended him for an assignment he couldn’t turn down, up north in the deep south of North Carolina’s Piedmont Triad area.

Harry and his assistant, Mona Morgan, take on an unsolved, nine- year-old murder that has never been declared cold. The investigation leads Harry to a wife beater, a homosexual sociopath, and secret software operations of a major credit card company.

Harry and Mona demonstrate their skills as professional investigators in this intriguing mystery motived by love, greed and the desire to kill.

The corporation finds itself under attack when used cars mysteriously explode, catch on fire, or fail, due to a variety of other causes. Law suits proliferate and the negative and highly visible media coverage promises to destroy the company’s business.

Harry accepts the task of finding who and why someone is on a mission to destroy Evans Enterprises. His investigation soon reveals a deeper darker mystery, fueled by envy, hate and revenge. A slow burning hate, motivated by an act of simple greed committed forty years earlier.
