Willa Dean Hall was born in Wilkes County, North Carolina and lived there with her parents and three siblings. She met the love of her life, Ed Hall, when she was twelve years old and attending a church service. They married when she graduated from high school and were married for fifty-seven years until his death in 1996.

After they had been married for twelve years, with her husband and three children she moved to Winston-Salem. Ten years later, he was transferred to Charlotte, where they moved with the two youngest children.

When her husband retired, they moved to the small town of Huntersville. When a developer bought all the land surrounding them, they sold and moved a few miles up the road to Davidson, NC where they spent the rest of their lives.

All her life, Willa Dean was an avid reader and writer. As a young woman she wrote skits with her sisters and the three of them performed them at festivals and charity events.

THEN is a charming collection of writings that will take you back to a sweeter, gentler time.

Willa Dean Hall grew up during the depression and saw hard times, but she always had a way of putting a positive spin on life, no matter what the circumstance. Her writings have been compared to the likes of Mark Twain and Laura Ingles Wilder. She uses the expressions that were poplar for the era and her descriptions of place and sense of character transport the reader to that time and place. As she shares with the reader the real happenings of her family the reader gets to know and learns to love the Bumgarner children, as well as their parents.

Willa Dean Hall (1921 – 2001) did not get to see her book in print, but as a tribute to her mother, Lynette Hall Hampton put the collection together. The cover is a cross-stitched picture of the Bumgarner cabin that is mentioned the book.
